There is nothing better than living close to green spaces filled with natural beauty and serene tranquility. A tree canopy assessment covering the entire city of Philadelphia was published in December 2018 by the City of Philadelphia in partnership with the University of Vermont Spatial Analysis Lab.

What does tree canopy mean?

Tree canopy is effectively an aerial view of the green landscape of a specific area, including branches, stems, and leaves. Tree canopy measurements include open land, recreational parks, and green spaces used to develop tree canopy coverage over a given area. The tree canopy assessment study evaluated the entire city of Philadelphia and further quantified green coverage by zip code.

There are many benefits to living in green environments including, improved general mood and attitude, reduced stress, better mental health and functioning, noise reduction, increased socialization and so much more.

What is the greenest neighborhood in Northeast Philly?

In Northeast Philly, per the 2018 green canopy assessment, the neighborhood with the most amount of green coverage (about 33% to be precise) is Bustleton (19115 zip code).

Bustleton is a beautiful Northeast neighborhood consisting of tree-lined streets, green neighborhoods, Lackman Playground, Hayes Woods, and adjacent to Pennypack Park, a large 1,600-acre space of wetlands, woodlands, and meadows. Pennypack Park is one of the largest park systems in the entire country and offers hiking, biking, walking, and running trails.

The Bustleton neighborhood in Northeast Philly is a popular residential choice. It was ranked by Redfin as one of the “hottest, most affordable neighborhoods” in the entire United States of America. It’s not uncommon for people to offer more than list price to buy a home in the area. Redfin says approximately 30% of the time, people pay more than the list price to get a home in Bustleton.

No other zip code in Northeast Philly has more tree coverage than Bustleton. All the surrounding neighborhoods including Somerton (19116), Fox Chase (19111), West Torresdale (19154), Pennypack (19114), Pennypack Park (19136) and Rhawnhurst (19152) have less than or equal to 24% tree canopy coverage which is still great, but less than Bustleton.

You can see the exact tree canopy coverage by zip code in NE Philadelphia neighborhoods in the chart below. The darker the green, the greater the coverage.

If you’re planning to live in the Northeast and want a neighborhood with a good amount of greenery, Bustleton may be your best choice. There are plenty of nice apartments to offer and houses to buy, so you should be able to find something that fits your lifestyle.
